Australia doesn’t want to let the world forget their pedigree in ginger beer history. Founded in 1960, Bundaberg has been brewing ginger beer for a long time and is proud to be an Australian original.
Unlike the more common long neck bottles, Bundaberg comes in a stubby amber vessel evocative of a brewing barrel. It has a fun flip then rip cap. It isn’t resealable… so drink up! The label is full of descriptors – a kangaroo hops along the bottom of the label to remind us of its Australian roots. It proudly shows that it’s a craft beer brewed for a minimum of 3 days. There is even an instruction on the top of the label: “Invert bottle before opening”. Bundaberg has ginger bits and they do not want you to miss it.
Bundaberg is slightly carbonated with a natural, cloudy appearance. There is a sweet ginger scent immediately available upon opening the bottle. Bundaberg has a thick, sweet taste – definitely a ginger flavor profile, but still sweet with a very slight citrus hint. At 40g of sugar, it is not being mistaken for a dry ginger. The ginger essence is a little more pronounced than other ginger beers and adds a little bit of spice. The ginger bits are very present and puts it in a smaller category of ginger beer, that is – the ones with the floating ginger bits. The sweetness lingers past the ginger flavor. This seems like a drinking ginger beer, rather than one for mixing – though a good mixer could ease off the sweetness.
