Everyone makes the claim to be the best, but something about Rocky’s self-granted title of “World’s Finest Ginger Beer” seems to be a bit of a strong come on. Will the drink be able to cash all the checks their label is writing?
A relative newcomer to the scene, Rocky’s started out in the Chicagoland area and boasts a ginger beer that is handcrafted in small batches. A claim usually reserved for more “serious” brews. Named after its founder, Rocky Mosele, it was developed to reflect his health-conscious nature as well as his desire to find a perfect ginger beer that will not disappoint his cocktails. The marketing for Rocky’s Ginger Beer comes out swinging: No artificial color. Pure cane sugar. Natural flavors. Made in the USA.
But Rocky’s isn’t content to talk about itself. Atypically, it compares itself against other brands: Goslings and Barritt’s. Rocky’s is not taking any prisoners.
Enough about its marketing. What about the drink itself? The 12 oz drink comes in a stubby plastic bottle. Not the stubbiest, but not exactly a bottle you’d carry around at a party. Rocky’s is an impeccably clear drink. Rather than highlight the ginger pulp like other brews, Rocky’s chooses to focus on its natural flavors to do the work. It has a clean, unmuddled scent, almost citrus-y. The taste reflects the look – it’s clean and focuses on the ginger and sugar flavor. There isn’t very much carbonation, but makes up for it with a bit of a ginger burn. Strong, sweet, and cleanly satisfying.
A very strong contender to be a great compliment to a cocktail or serve as a standalone drink. Is this handcrafted ginger beer the “world’s finest”? Grab a bottle and settle that decision on your own.
